British Canoeing White Water Award - Kayak

20181014_130352

This course was run on the river Canche in Northern France.

Unfortunately, due to Brexit, British Canoeing coaching qualifications are no longer recognised in the EU, so we are now unable to offer this course.

Apologies.

This course covers the British Canoeing White Water Award in kayaks.

It is based on the river Canche, about one hour's drive from Calais.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Travel to Montreuil - Set up camp - Coaching session on campsite Mill Race.

Day 2 - Paddle the lower section of the river from Beaurainville to Montreuil.

Day 3 - Paddle the harder upper section of the river from Guisy to Beaurainville to Guisy - return to UK in the evening.

The river is graded 1 and 2. This course is a kayak only event.

You will be guided/coached by two British Canoeing qualified coaches. The trip is led by Grant Scamell - BCU Level 5 Coach.

This course covers the white water skills applicable to the British Canoeing White Water Personal Performance Award.

The course is suitable for paddlers with some white water experience who would like to develop their skills further. Being able to eskimo roll is not essential but is highly desirable.

British Canoeing definition of the award:

"The White Water Award endorses your skill, judgement and decision making to ensure a successful day on rivers up to grade 2. You will be confident in planning and undertaking journeys on moving water with proficient skills to be in control throughout. Your award should be seen as a sound basis for building the experience and knowledge associated with the Progressive White Water Award".

The course covers:

* Reading white water features on the river

* Safety on the river

* Breaking into the current

* Breaking out of the current

* S turns from one eddy to another

* Crossing the current (Ferry glides)

* High cross

* Getting out of stoppers

* Dynamic paddling to maintain control on moving water

Participants would normally be expected to provide their own equipment at this level.

We will be camping at Les Fontaine de les Clercs which is right on the river in Montreuil.

If you would prefer B & B or hotel accommodation, their are numerous B & Bs and Hotels in Montreuil to suit all budgets. We can provide a list of these on request.

Tourist information on Montreuil.

"Montreuil is a perfect destination for a weekend away with its beautiful old houses and churches, its imposing ramparts and its cobbled streets - not to mention a good selection of restaurants and hotels. In fact its origins lie in Roman times when the sea ran up the estuary of the Canche as far as Montreuil. Victor Hugo spent only one half day in Montreuil on the 4th September 1837 when he was on a voyage to the north with his mistress. Montreuil was immortalised by him when he decided to use it as the setting for “Les Miserables”.

Costs:

The cost for the coaching/river guiding is £195.00 per person for the two and a half days on the river.

Transport is not covered but we can provide transport free of charge for up to five people. Otherwise it's just a question of making your own way there by car/shuttle.

You would need to cover your own food and accommodation costs.

Please see below a guide to the river which will hopefully give you a good feel for what it's like.
